(Don't laugh)
Since we lived in Iowa and had no other family around, my Mom was always the one who cooked the big Thanksgiving dinner. We had some fun traditions that I have tried to pass down to my children. We always woke up and watched the 'Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade' on TV. My mom would make a cheese ball served with Sociables crackers. We would always have a new puzzle to put together that would take all day long and into the night, but we would finish on that day. Another tradition . . . candles on the table with Thanksgiving decorations.
That year, the decor involved a dried flower arrangement. Well, my older sisters started to show off saying that they could stick their finger in the fire of the candle without it burning them. They all took their turns sweeping their finger through the flame. My mom kept telling them to stop, but they didn't. Then it was my turn. I wanted to be just like my older sisters. So, I reached to do it too. However, I misjudged a hair and instead of sweeping my finger through the flame, I knocked the candle over . . . right into the dried flower arrangement that blew up in flames in about 1/2 second. My mom started freaking out and my dad grabbed it, threw in onto the kitchen floor, and stomped it out. Well, my dad had just gotten a cast off his foot the day before (he broke the same exact bone in his foot that I did . . only running, not just being clumsy) and had to stomp the flames out with that foot. He was SERIOUSLY mad. I got sent to my room for the rest of the day. I remember sitting on my bed and just sobbing and sobbing. I can't even remember if I got to eat Thanksgiving dinner or not, but I KNOW that I didn't get to help put the puzzle together and that was something I would look forward to all year.
I will never live this story down. It is brought up year after year . . . as it was again yesterday. I guess one of the things I am grateful for this year is humor, because without it, life wouldn't be very fun. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

that pic is so cute! oh the good old awkward years! Got to love them@
I don't think I have ever heard that story before. Poor little Nanci, no Turkey dinner for you that year, i'm sorry it's funny though. And thanks for your counsel yesterday, sorry to crash your Thanksgiving morning. But it was nice to get to talk to you!
OK, this is the pic I was saying that looked like that one of Alex on your blog for your Halloween post where he is dressed up as Hulk. Seriously.
That is the funniest story! Why have you not told us that one before? I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving! And just remember that next year will not be like this one! I love you and I hope you are doing better! I hope you can still come up for the big PARTY!!
I am totally laughing at that picture, even though you told me not too. The haircut is so cute. I am pretty sure I have seen it before now, but every time always feels like the first. I am sorry that Thanksgiving memory brings such sadness. It kind-of made me giggle (except for the not get dinner part.) You always have memorable stories.
I miss you so much Nanci. You make me smile (and laugh) any time I read your blog. Love the scooter.
Oh Nance, I have never heard that story before. You should have never been sent to your room, you were just doing what your sisters were doing and then it ended in disaster but not on purpose.
I'm sorry about your thanksgiving this year, I know you and your family have had your fair share of struggles this year and I am soooo sorry. I'm sure it will be a better one next year.
I can't wait to see you in a couple of weeks, we will just hang and have fun. I will totally help you with your kiddos. Love you!
Love the pic!!!!!!!!
ps will you be working dec 10?? Dr t will start me that day.
That is so mean to send you to your room for the night - it was only an accident! (I probably would've sent my kid to his room too) But hey, look at the memories it brings!
Cheer up Charlie! I am so excited to see you in a few weeks, bless your foot...
THAT STORY TOTALLY IS A NANCI STORY. THAT PICTURE IS SOO FUNNY, IT THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO TELL A STORY ABOUT HOW THE BOY IN THE PICTURE PASSED AWAY OR SOMWTHING. NO OFFENSE NANC!
